1020 Cartel 1020 Cartel is a South African record label established by multi-award-winning musician and producer duo, Jabulani Sjava Makhubo and Mfanafuthi Ruff Nkosi. The name pays homage to where it all started: unit number 1020 of an apartment block in downtown Joburg where Sjava and Ruff lived together with fellow African Trap Movement pioneers Swati (RIP), Emtee, Saudi and Ranks to mention just a few. The vision of 1020 Cartel is to motivate and inspire a shift in the music scene both locally and abroad, expand the African Trap genre and introduce new talent into the culture.The first signees to the label are poet and orator Nue_Sam, vocalist extraordinaire Yallunder, rapper/hiphop artist Anzo and Maskandi heavyweight Mzukulu.

The duo teamed up with Nothando Migogo of Sosela Legal & Advisory to establish 1020 Management, the operations and strategy arm of the 1020 group. iSambulo, which means “The Revelation”, drops on August 28th and introducesthe four new artists signed to the 1020 Cartel stable, namely vocalist Yallunder, rapper Anzo, poet Nue_Sam and maskandi artist Mzukulu.
It is unknown why the two friends elected to use 1020 Cartel as the name of the record label, however electing to own a recording company is a particularly symbolic move, especially for Sjava, who was once signed to Ambitiouz Entertainment.
“After cutting ties with record label Ambitiouz Entertainment that turned him into a household name, Sjava will today launch his independent record stable. Sjava has teamed up with renowned engineer and producer Mfanafuthi “Ruff ” Nkosi.
